Child Restraint System (CRS) or Baby Car Seat is a safety equipment in a motor vehicle that is specialized for child passengers. When install in the vehicle correctly, car seat helps to protect children during road accident from severe injuries.
In Malaysia, the CRS regulation for Baby Car Seat/ Child Restraint System (CRS) has been gazetted by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and on 1st January 2020, the law was implemented for private vehicles. The use of Baby Car Seat/ Child Restraint System is mandatory for every child passenger who meets the following criteria:
- Aged under 12 years
- Weight less than 36 kg
- Height less than 136 cm
CRS Guidelines according to child category are as shown below.
- Group 0/0+: Rear-facing Baby Car Seat. Age 0-18 months. Weight up to 13kg & height 83cm.
- Group 1: Forward-facing Baby Car Seat. Age 15 months- 4 years old. Weight 9-18kgs & height 71cm & above
- Group 2: Forward-facing Baby Car Seat. Age 4-7 years old. Weight 15-25kgs & height 100cm and above.
- Group 3: Forward-facing Baby Car Seat. Age 6 years old and above. Weight 22-36kgs & height up to 135cm.
Each Baby Car Seat/ Child Restraint System (CRS) must have valid compliance based on United Nations (UN) Regulations R44 or R129. Every Baby Car Sear/ Child Restraint System (CRS) that complies with existing legislation must have a complete certification of UN Regulation R44 / R129 and an approval mark sticker known as E-Mark on the Baby Car Seat/ Child Restraint System (CRS).
