Child Restraint System (CRS) or Baby Car Seat is a safety equipment in a motor vehicle that is specialized for child passengers. When install in the vehicle correctly, car seat helps to protect children during road accident from severe injuries.

In Malaysia, the CRS regulation has been gazetted by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and on 1st January 2020, the law was implemented for private vehicles. The use of CRS is mandatory for every child passenger who meets the following criteria:

Aged under 12 years
Weight less than 36 kg
Height less than 136 cm

CRS Guidelines according to child category are as shown below.

Group 0/0+: Rear-facing Car Seat. Age 0-18 months. Weight up to 13kg & height 83cm.
Group 1: Forward-facing Car Seat. Age 15months- 4years. Weight 9-18kgs & height 71cm & above
Group 2: Forward-facing Car Seat. Age 4-7years. Weight 15-25kgs & height 100cm and above.
Group 3: Forward-facing Car Seat. Age 6years and above. Weight 22-36kgs & height up to 135cm.

Each CRS must have valid compliance based on United Nations (UN) Regulations R44 or R129. Every CRS that complies with existing legislation must have a complete certification of UN Regulation R44 / R129 and an approval mark sticker known as E-Mark on the CRS. An example of the E-Mark is as follows:-

Subject to the CRS category and design, it can be installed on any front passenger seat or rear passenger seat that has been equipped with an ISO-Fixed support system or a 3-point seat belt. Any CRS category that faces the rear, it can be installed on the front passenger seat unless the airbag function has been deactivated.

Parents can check the list of CRS models that have been approved by JPJ regarding compliance with UN Regulation R44 or R129 through JPJ’s official portal which is www.jpj.gov.my
