The admission and placement of students to national secondary schools will be registered by national primary school teachers during Year 6. All Malaysian students will get a placement in a secondary school based on their current address and vacancies available at the applied school.
Application for Secondary School Placement
Teacher will distribute “Borang Permohonan Penempatan Sekolah (BPPS) Tingkatan 1/ Peralihan. Parent/guardian need to fill up these information:-
- Nama
- IC
- Residential address
- First Choice (Feeder School), Reason & Distance in KM
- Second Choice (Sekolah Dalam Daerah), Reason & Distance in KM
- Third Choice (Sekolah Luar Daerah), Reason & Distance in KM
Three School of Choice:
- Feeder School: School that are usually within the vicinity of your child’s current primary school whose students will usually be given automatic promotion or acceptance into the secondary school. Feeder schools for each primary school are different. So, you need to choose from the list of feeder schools stated in your BPPS form.
- Sekolah Dalam Daerah: School that are in the same district as your child’s current primary school. The list of schools will be provided by teacher. Eg. your child primary school is under Zone Bangsar Pudu, you can choose any school here too.
- Sekolah Luar Daerah: School that are in the different district as your child’s current primary school. The list of schools will be provided by teacher. Eg. my child primary school is under Zone Bangsar Pudu, I can also choose schools from Zone Sentul & Zone Keramat.
- Note: You can only choose schools within the same state in this form.

What is National secondary schools?
Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) and Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan (SMJK) are government schools, and adopts the Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Menengah (KSSM).
- National Secondary School (SMK): Students come from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK), Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC), Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil (SJKT). The medium of instruction is mainly Malay and English. Students can choose to take Chinese classes and sit for Chinese language exams.
- National-Type Secondary School (SMJK): Students must graduated from Chinese primary schools (SJKC) and chinese language is a compulsory subject for all students. The medium of instruction is Malay, English and Mandarin.
Placement to Secondary School
Your child will get Placement Letter from the school teacher. The placement letter will state:-
- Child Name, IC and Primary School Name
- Approved Secondary School Name
- Form 1 or Peralihan
- Placement Confirmation Dates
Parents are required to confirm the placement at the approved secondary school within the placement confirmation period to smooth the placement process and avoid any difficulties by bringing documents such as:-
- Placement letter for Year 6 students to Transition Class / Form 1 (Original)
- Child’s Birth Certificate (Photocopy)
- Child’s Identity Card (Photocopy)
Students who achieve grades E and F in the final exam of the academic session and are placed in “Peralihan” can appeal to be placed in Form 1. They must pass the Malay language literacy screening test that will be held on a specified date.

- If you want to enrol your child to chinese independent school/ private school/ international school: You still need to fill up this “Borang Permohonan Penempatan Sekolah (BPPS)”. After your child get the placement at the secondary school, you need to withdraw by filling up a form at the assigned secondary school.
- If you want to appeal to another secondary school within the same state, you need to register first at the assigned school but inform that you would like to appeal for another secondary school in the same state. They will provide you with the form PUA275 “Permohonan Untuk Bertukar Sekolah” and advice you with the procedures.
- If you want to enrol your child to a school in another state (eg. primary school in KL but you want to enrol secondary school in PJ): After your child get the placement at the secondary school in Kuala Lumpur, you need to register first at the assigned school but inform that you would like to appeal for another secondary school in the another state. They will provide you with the form PUA275 “Permohonan Untuk Bertukar Sekolah” and advice you with the procedures.
